Abstract

Juniperus, or junipers of the Sabina Section of North America, are a group of trees and shrubs in the Cupressaceae family, whose geographical distribution spans western North America to northern Guatemala. The Section comprises 61 species and a subgroup of 22 of them, characterized by having leaves with serrated margins. The species of this subgroup contain up to 191 metabolites; however, among these, α-pinene stands out for its diverse biological activities. The objective of this review is to show the potential effect of the application of secondary metabolites from junipers of the Sabina Section of North America. Therefore, publications available in Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, and SciELO from 2000 to 2024 were consulted. These publications mention their antioxidant capacity, cytotoxicity, as well as their antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal, antiprotist, anthelmintic, wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic activities. It is concluded that the Sabina Section offers broad pharmacological potential and an alternative source of biological compounds for use in various industries.
